About Me

I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and raised in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. I was drawn to work in Hawaii through an opportunity with one of my fellow residents. Beyond that, Maui captivated me as did our wonderful organization, the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG). I have a young daughter and a son, and can think of no better place to raise a child than Hawaii.

About my practice

When I was growing up my best friend’s father, a thoracic surgeon who was pioneering video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, would bring home VHS tapes of thoracic surgery. I loved to watch the videos and it was then I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. I chose urology because it seemed to be the most diverse of all the specialties. As a urologist, I treat men and women of all ages, and this involves endoscopy, robotics, open and minimally invasive surgery, and medical management. The integration of all doctors and specialties makes HPMG an enjoyable place to work. Our medical group allows me to focus on patient care, not the financials of running a business, and this is important to me.I believe in listening to my patients—they will often tell me what is wrong and what’s the diagnosis. To stay up-to-date with the latest developments in my field, I attend conferences and home courses. However, my experience has shown me that the difficulty lies not in developing new ideas, but escaping from the old ones. In my practice, I never rush or make a patient feel hurried. It’s important to hear them out. I’m not averse to learning from my patients as well. I also appreciate the courage of my patients when told they have cancer. My patients embody the saying “You never know how tough you are until being tough is the only option left.”

How I thrive

For exercise, I like to run, golf, surf, etc. I eat well and limit my consumption of meat and fried or processed foods. Reducing stress is another important aspect of good health.Raising my young children is now a big focus in my life. Thanks to HPMG I have no regrets about work-life balance because my practice allows adequate time to spend with my family.
