Biography

I have been with Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center Department of Orthopedics since 1991, and have served as the chief of orthopedics there from 1991-2005. Prior to working at Kaiser Permanente, I was a staff orthopedic surgeon at San Bernardino County Medical Center for four years, where I did primarily traumatic orthopedics. I took seven months off for a traveling fellowship in sports medicine and joint replacement, training at the Toronto Orthopedic and Arthritis Hospital. I also spent three months in Europe (Basel, Switzerland; Berlin, Germany; and Lecco, Italy) and finished up with three months in Chicago, doing exclusively joint- replacement surgery. I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and completed my primary education there. I did my undergraduate training and received my B.S. degree in zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I have an older brother who lives in Miami, Florida and practices general medicine. I have two boys. I chose a career in medicine as I had an affinity for sciences and enjoyed working with and helping people. I chose orthopedics as it allows working with all age groups and is a quality-of-life specialty. In my spare time, I enjoy coaching baseball and staying fit through exercise. I have lived in California since 1986, and I enjoy it here.

About my practice

My practice consists of primarily hip and knee problems, although I do general orthopedics and have a lot of past experience with limb deformity correction. I have in recent years focused more on hip and knee replacement because of the huge boost to quality of life that this gives the majority of patients. I try very hard to provide personal care and follow-through with each of my patients.

How I thrive

Being a physician can be stressful, and the long hours are often not conducive to the best health. I exercise regularly, and in my spare time I am usually running around with my own kids or kids that I coach in baseball. One reason that I have stayed at Kaiser Permanente so long is that the work system does allow me more personal free time to take care of myself and enjoy my family.
