About Me

I was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Southern California. I went to University of California, Los Angeles for my Bachelor of Arts and the University of Southern California School of Medicine for my medical degree. After doing an internship at California Pacific Medical Center and a residency at the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center, I became certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. My family and I decided to move to Maui because of the natural beauty of the island, its warm and friendly people, and its family-friendly culture.

About my practice

My father was a physician, and my mother was a registered nurse. Watching them work for the good of their patients instilled in me a desire to contribute to others in the same way. My love of caring for children attracted me to pediatrics.

To ensure that my medical knowledge remains current, I read pediatrics journals, attend professional medical conferences, go to continuing medical education events, and consult colleagues. My membership in the American Academy of Pediatrics also gives me access to the latest research and other developments in my field.

While spending 20 years with the Permanente Medical Group in Northern California, I came to firmly embrace the Kaiser Permanente model of health care. I particularly value Hawaii Permanente Medical Group's commitment to the quality of life of Kaiser Permanente members, the community, and its physicians, providers, and staff.

To help families make educated decisions about treatment plans, I make a point to explain the reasoning behind my recommendations. It’s important for everyone to recognize that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent, that we all do the best we can and have good intentions. Relating my experiences of raising my own five kids helps me to bring that point home. Most importantly, health care providers should respect their patients as they themselves would want to be respected.

How I thrive

Hiking, walking, and cross-training help to keep me in good shape. To stay emotionally grounded, I meditate, do mindfulness exercises, practice gratitude, and try to remember to slow down and smell the roses. Outside of work I focus on spending quality time with my family and exploring our Maui community. I’m still learning how to garden on Maui and am trying to figure out how to get my banana plant to bear fruit. In my spare time I also enjoy reading, playing the piano, and learning to play new instruments.
