Your pregnancy: weeks 1 to 4
Your baby
During this time, the egg travels to your uterus, where your baby will grow and develop. Things are happening fast — by 4 weeks, your baby’s heart, brain, and lungs are already forming. Eye development begins at this stage, when optic nerves appear on each side of your little one’s head.
Your body
If you know you’re between 1 and 4 weeks pregnant, you found out earlier than most people do. Do you feel any different? This early in your pregnancy, the answer is probably no. You may experience tender breasts, nausea, and fatigue — similar to how you feel right before you start your period. No changes yet? No worries. Many people don’t start to “feel pregnant” until they’re a little further along.
Your to-do list
- If you haven’t taken a pregnancy test, now’s the time.
- Call us as soon as you know you’re pregnant. You can speak to a nurse, get important information, and find out when to schedule your first prenatal appointment.
- Choose a doctor or midwife (where available) to care for you during your pregnancy.
- Start taking a prenatal vitamin. They’re available without a prescription.
- If you smoke, quit. Your baby’s health depends on it, and we can help. Sign up for a class to quit smoking.
