You can take many steps at home to live healthier and improve the condition of your heart. Small changes like a heart-healthy diet and regular exercise can help with high blood pressure, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. And you can improve your condition if you quit smoking and limit alcohol
Your doctor may recommend a minimally invasive procedure to treat your heart condition. These procedures can have lower risks than surgery and shorter recovery times. Some of these procedures, like a coronary angioplasty, can be performed with local anesthetic. In other words, you won’t need to be put to sleep. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about any minimally invasive procedure.
Your doctor may prescribe medications to prevent heart conditions or keep heart disease from getting worse. Certain medications can even treat the cause of your heart condition, reducing your symptoms and helping you feel better. Take your medications as prescribed and contact your doctor if you have any questions.
You may need an advanced procedure to help your heart work better. That could mean bypass surgery to open clogged arteries, getting a pacemaker, or having a transcatheter aortic valve implantation or replacement (TAVI/TAVR). Talk with your doctor to understand the potential risks of any advanced procedure.
