Hello, and welcome to my Web page. My name is Tom Griffiths, and I am an anesthesiologist specializing in cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
I was born and raised in rural England, and I met my wife between undergraduate and postgraduate work while I was teaching English in Japan. Being a native Californian, she convinced me that life did not have to be spent in overcast, rainy conditions, and so we moved to California. Before leaving for California we had our first son in England; we subsequently had two more boys here, now all of whom have shoulder length hair and call each other “bro.”
I trained at a combined anesthesia/internal medicine program at UC San Diego. I then debated between cardiology and cardiothoracic anesthesia but decided to remain in the operating room and completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
I try to run or row every morning before work. This means I end up going to bed soon after my kids, as an anesthesiologist’s day typically starts around 6-6:30 a.m. On the weekends I spend my time playing with my kids and indoctrinating them into golf, soccer, rugby, or basketball, basically anything that means they hopefully will go to bed easily at the end of the day.
