Where I practice
Hello, I’m Dr. Compean, a primary care physician for Kaiser Permanente in Lancaster. My practice seems to attract mostly mature members, perhaps because I can better relate to their needs. I love working with both men and women and find seniors to be very inspirational.
My family has been a part of both Mexico and America for three generations. My grandfather came to the United States as a migrant worker in the early 1900s. Several of his children were born here, including my father. My mother came to visit, met my dad, and they were soon married. As a youngster, I traveled often between the two countries. In my early teens, I asked my mom if I could go to school in Mexico. I felt the bilingual public school program I was enrolled in left much to be desired. While I was living in Mexico, I encountered a group of doctors who flew in once a month to help poor families. Since I spoke both English and Spanish, I served as a translator. Watching their work inspired me to pursue a career in medicine myself. I attended medical school in Guadalajara and returned to the United States to serve my residency in Ohio. I was in private practice for a dozen years before joining Kaiser Permanente in 2006. I was impressed by their comprehensive care.
About my practice
When I was in private practice, I discovered that I was often losing patients to Kaiser Permanente. I was curious why, and so I investigated their unique approach to health care. Their practice of preventive medicine made sense, and when the opportunity arose, I joined the Kaiser Permanente team. It was a good decision. When you first visit me, you’ll find that I ask a lot of questions. I encourage you to do the same. We need to get to know each other and build mutual trust and respect if I am going to be successful as your physician. I’ve found I relate very well to mature members. We tend to share a common perspective on life, and I relish working with people in their prime.
How I thrive
My husband and I lead a quiet life. He loves to cook. I love to read. We try to eat healthy foods and exercise as best we can. I often tag along on trips to the grocery store and help him pick out fresh fruits and vegetables. We make a good team.
