Where I practice
Welcome to the Ophthalmology Department. My colleagues and I provide comprehensive eye care services to over 500,000 Kaiser Permanente members in San Diego. I am a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the retina. My practice includes both medical (office) and surgical (operating room) treatments for eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and retinal detachments.
I have been an ophthalmologist for more than 18 years and a retina specialist for the last 10 years. I received my general ophthalmology training in the military at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco. My sub-specialty training in vitreoretinal surgery was at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Before joining Kaiser Permanente in 2005, I was a retina specialist in the U. S Army, practicing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., the U. S. military's largest and busiest health care facility.
About my practice
I feel that my greatest strength as a physician is how I relate to my patients. Caring for patients requires a doctor to be both a sympathetic listener and a good communicator. Explaining a complicated problem in understandable terms and presenting treatment options in a way that enable people to make an informed choice allows them to be full partners in managing their heath care. I am dedicated to the satisfaction of my patients.
How I thrive
My dedication to my work often means that I miss dinner with my family or that I arrive late to a dance recital or big game. So my time away from work is very precious. I spend most of that time with my family. I am married (21 years) and have two girls. My wife and I take great pleasure in the responsibility of raising our children and introducing them to their future through sports, music, dance, travel, and cooking. Like many of you, I am trying harder to eat a little less, exercise a little more and enjoy life along the way.
