About me

Hello, I'm Joel Spencer, an anesthesiologist at Kaiser Permanente in the San Diego service area.

Biography

My journey into medicine started with my family. My father was a small-town family physician, taking care of patients from birth to death. As a teen, I worked in his office and observed his relationships with those for whom he cared. This led me to pursue medicine as a career choice. Although I did not find myself drawn to primary care in medical school, I did find myself drawn to an organization with a commitment to delivering the some of the best quality primary care available in the United States. Throughout my life I have maintained the habit of playing sports, particularly soccer, and I am currently trying to pass this along to my children, who are growing faster than I would have believed.

About my practice

Our anesthesia team is truly an example of “teamwork making the dream work.” It is my privilege to work with wonderful anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetists at Kaiser Permanente San Diego. Each of them has taught me ways to improve in my daily work life and passed along their years of experience without hesitation.

How I thrive

I thrive by spending time with my family, playing sports, reading books (by myself and with/to my children), and by cooking meals for as many people as I can get into my home. Nothing bonds a people like a meal enjoyed together.
