I was born in San Diego, California, and was raised on a farm near the Mexican border. At age 19 I came to Hawaii to surf and visited regularly after that. The U.S. Navy later transferred me to the former Navy Air Station at Barbers Point as a flight surgeon. My father was a farmer and a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during WWII. Education was important in my family, and my father wanted his children to have a wider range of career choices than those available to him, especially during the war.
In my childhood my family physicians were brothers from Kauai. They did everything from birthing to elder care, and this was all I knew of the medical field. These men formed my perception of the complete physician. I didn’t know that there were specialty fields until I was older. Another family practice physician who mentored me during my undergraduate years was a team physician for the San Diego Chargers. He broadened my perspective and guided me in my choices of medical schools and residencies. These influences and my desire to develop long-term rapport with my patients led to my choice of family medicine as a specialty. Currently I serve as a flight surgeon in the Hawaii Air National Guard reserves, where I have given aeromedical briefings. In addition to English, I speak some basic Spanish. Membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians and other national medical organizations helps to keep me up-to-date in my field. I also attend conferences, read professional journals, subscribe to the online Up To Date! and take online self-assessments. The Hawaii Permanente Medical Group’s emphasis on providing high quality, integrated, and affordable health care was the primary reason I wanted to become a part of this organization. My goal is to provide exceptional care to the entire family. This includes listening quietly to my patients, learning about their lives, and developing trust and understanding in my relationships with them.
I try to be physically active every day, usually in the water. Spending time with friends and family is important to me. I especially enjoy sharing and experiencing my children's wonder as they learn and grow.
