About Me

I was born on Oahu and grew up in Pearl City. I did my undergraduate work at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and my medical training at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. For my psychiatric internship and residency, I went to the University of California, San Diego, where I also did a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry. After living and working in San Diego for 19 years, I was glad to move back home to Hawaii so that I could be closer to my friends and extended family.

About my practice

Having a career as a physician was an attractive idea to me because of my long-held desire to be in a position through which I could make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families. At the same time I wanted to have the opportunity to engage in continuous learning and personal development. Being a psychiatrist has been an ideal way to accomplish these goals. The long-term relationships that I’ve developed with my patients while watching them grow and evolve over time are very rewarding to me.

To stay up-to-date in medicine and particularly in psychiatry, I participate in online continuing medical education programs, attend professional conferences, read medical journals, and confer with colleagues.

I grew up in the Kaiser Permanente health care system and have warm memories of my experiences at the Punawai Clinic in Waipahu. When I decided to move back to Hawaii, I heard great things about Hawaii Permanente Medical Group from my former medical school classmates. At my interview I was especially impressed by the organization’s philosophy of placing patient care first. I also appreciated the welcoming atmosphere, the attractive facilities, and the modern technology.

In my opinion, care should be a team effort between physician and patient, focused on the totality of each patient’s situation, and tailored to each individual and his or her family. I always enjoy listening to my patients’ stories as well as hearing and responding to their questions.

How I thrive

To stay physically fit, I do stretching exercises and practice yoga. Spending quality time with my family and friends and playing with my two dogs lift my spirits and help me to de-stress and recharge. I also enjoy cooking at home, traveling to new places, and going on adventures with my daughter.
