I was born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to New York with my family at age fifteen. I majored in physics and mathematics while attending college in the Boston, Massachusetts area. In medical school, I realized that rather than concentrating on one system of the human body through biomedical research, I wanted to become a physician who understands and treats each patient as a whole person. I specialize in adult primary care. Since completing my medical residency in 1988, my experience has included practicing for fifteen years with Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii, and for several years each in New York and Massachusetts.
While practicing medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Maui, Hawaii, I discovered the joys of caring for older patients. I enjoyed learning about and appreciating what rich and fascinating lives they led. I feel privileged to work in the department of Geriatrics and Continuing Care. It allows me to help elders recover from illness or surgical procedures, as well as being able to conduct medical visits with home-bound patients. In my practice, I like to take the time to understand my patients' values, goals and wishes. I frequently encourage patients to participate in the decision-making process about their medical treatment plans.
It is important for me to give myself some time each day to relax and clear my mind. I practice Tai Chi and enjoy cooking, reading fiction, playing piano, listening to classical and world music, going for long walks and cross-country skiing. My husband and I look forward to settling in Portland, Oregon and discovering the wide variety of cultural and environmental activities that are available both in the city and in the greater Northwest.
