Where I practice
Like many midwives, I took the long route to the profession I love. After a degree in linguistics and a dozen jobs, I went to nursing school specifically to become a labor and delivery nurse. Ten years later, I realized I wanted to expand my practice and follow women and their families through the entire pregnancy and birth and so became a certified nurse-midwife. Now I have the privilege of caring for woman throughout their lives. I grew up in Michigan and have lived in Hawaii, California, and Arizona. I have three adult children and a sweet dog named Rosie.
About my practice
When I moved to Hawaii, I had my first experience working for Kaiser Permanente. I have worked for three KP regions now, and I truly believe that this integrated health system is the best way to provide health care. I had spent only five days in Portland (in 2005) before moving to the area in 2017 to take a position at Westside Medical Center, but I knew this was the place to be. When in the clinic, I strive to listen to women with my whole heart to help them make the right choices for themselves and their families. Kaiser Permanente helps me by participating in studies and providing access to the most recent evidence for best medical and midwifery care. I enjoy taking care of women of all ages, but I have a soft spot for teens and those seeking birth-control options, because if a woman doesn't have control over her fertility, she doesn't have control over her destiny. I believe all women should have control over their destinies.
How I thrive
My favorite way to thrive is walking with my dog. I ride my bike regularly (alas, not in the rain!), and enjoy hiking, reading, gardening, board games, and competitive trivia. I am a dedicated traveler and have been to 78 countries so far, learning new things and experiencing new cultures.
