About me
I grew up in a small farming community in western Kansas, which gave me a deep appreciation for the natural world around me. I majored in zoology in college and applied to medical school to continue to develop my interests in biological sciences. While there, I came to believe that the worst pains were the psychological ones, more damaging to one's life than the physical ailments were. This led me to choose psychiatry for my area of practice, and I have never regretted that choice. I have been in various types of management positions for most of my career, serving as medical director of mental health centers for instance. I taught outpatient psychiatry to residents at the University of Utah Department of Psychiatry for over 8 years. I worked with Kaiser Permanente in Northern California for 11 years, before moving to the Portland area.
About my practice
Psychiatric practice is the most personal of the medical specialties, allowing me to focus on the inner life of my patients, seeking to find the most meaningful aspects of their lives, helping them to improve their overall quality of existence. I find that the process of therapy for my patients is also beneficial for my emotional growth and awareness of the richness of human experience. I have primarily worked with adults with anxiety, depression, and the more serious illnesses but have considerable experience with working with children as well. I generally will recommend medication trials for depression and anxiety; medications are essential for those who suffer with the severe mental illnesses.
How I thrive
I am blessed with a supportive family and a wide circle of friends. I still find much pleasure in the out of doors, be it with gardening or going for walks and longer hikes. I have explored a good bit of this world, with long hikes or river trips at the center of many of the experiences. I enjoy working with my hands, fixing and repairing and building things. I have been a long-time member of and volunteer for several environmental organizations.
