I was born in the Sichuan province of China, a warm fertile basin at the foothill of the Tibetan mountains, known for its spicy food. As a kid, I moved all around the world with my parents, growing up in Scotland and Canada before moving to the United States for school. There, I studied electrical engineering and biochemistry in undergrad and first became interested in medicine when I did a summer research project using digital signal processing techniques to amplify the quality of images used in prostate cancer surveillance. This led me to consider a career in radiology, but because of my tendency to fall asleep in dark rooms, I came to appreciate the breadth and complexity of internal medicine instead. My wife and I chose to settle in Portland because of the abundant nature, friendly people, compact walkable city, relaxed pace of life, and great weather!
As a hospitalist, I see my job as being your advocate and guide when you need to stay in the hospital. It can be a scary situation to be sick and have to navigate the health-care system at the same time. Hospitalists help start you on the right treatment and liaison with various specialists so that you can get the care you need to get better and get back to living life. I particularly enjoy distilling complex medical information down to simple and understandable concepts so that you can be informed each step of the way. In terms of specialty, I am a generalist but have a side interest in infectious and tropical diseases, borne from my love of travel and time spent abroad.
I'm passionate about wellness! I believe that total wellness requires a holistic approach, which includes but is not limited to fresh food, good exercise, adequate restful sleep, hobbies, friends, and downtime in which to do absolutely nothing. When I'm not working, you can usually find me out in nature — biking along the coast, hiking in rainforests, or climbing mountains.
