Originally from Cincinnati Ohio, I always wanted to be a doctor like my father, who was (and still is) my hero. I attended University of Michigan, where I majored in English. My wife and I moved to San Francisco after I graduated from medical school, and then up to Portland, where we have lived since 1976. My wife is an artist and painter. We have two sons; as they were growing up, we were active in Portland Public School's Japanese Magnet Program and in USA swimming. Now that our nest is empty, we have taken up Tango and travel.
I have practiced Pathology and Laboratory Medicine with Northwest Permanente since 1985. I also practiced Nuclear Medicine from 1985 to 1997. Much of my work involves looking at tissue biopsies under the microscope to make an accurate and timely diagnosis for our clinicians and patients. I have also been very active in the computerization of our medical practice, including multiple lab computer systems, our first home grown electronic medical record Results Reporting, and the early implementation of our current electronic medical record HealthConnect. It has been very gratifying to see how incremental improvements in laboratory and computer technology have made patient care better and safer.
I ran for 25 years until I wore my knees out, then walked our dog for a decade until we wore his knees out, so now I swim and Tango. I juggle every morning before I come to work to make sure my mind is sharp; my minimum is 25 catches, but I almost always can do 125. I like books, movies, travel, and time with friends. I like fly fishing, but don't go nearly enough. I have a canoe in my garage that I need to inaugurate. I generally try to do what needs to be done, and try not to cast a big shadow.
