I was born in Bremerton, WA, and at a very young age, I found out that my father was good at what he did. As a result, he got promoted, and we moved quite a bit. In retrospect, that was a good thing as I saw a lot of our great country, including most of California, New Jersey, Montana, Washington state, and most other states in between when we drove back and forth! But ultimately, I am a West Coast kind of guy. I fell in love with Oregon when I first came to Lewis and Clark College in the late '70s. That was followed by medical school at Oregon Health & Science University, where, in my senior year, a surgical patient of mine matched me up with a cute nurse, and I have been married to her for over 25 years! My training in radiology was completed in Los Angeles, under the direction of Dr. Issac Sanders, who without a doubt was one of the most compassionate and loving teachers I could have ever had. I was so proud of him when he was awarded radiology's highest national honor, the ACR Gold Medal, in 2010.
Radiology is a fabulous specialty, with a unique mixture of patient care, computerized reading stations and ever changing high-tech imaging equipment. We play an important role in helping our family medicine physicians and other specialists diagnosis disease as early as possible. In particular, as one of the mammographers here at Kaiser Permanente Northwest, I assist in finding early breast cancer. Medicine has made tremendous progress with breast cancer during the past ten years. Radiology has been at the forefront of early detection, and ultimately, improved patient survival. Beyond this, I enjoy the day to day camaraderie of my 40 fellow colleagues, and my subspecialty interest in nuclear medicine and musculoskeletal MRI.
Downtime for everyone is important in life. At Kaiser Permanente, rest and reasonable work hours are encouraged for everyone. A well rested physician with low stress makes for a more compassionate, caring, and sharper diagnostician. To that end, I spend quality time with my wife and three boys. My second love beyond radiology is auto mechanics. I still change my own oil and brakes!
