I grew up in the Midwest, where I attended college and medical school before moving west to serve in the U.S. Navy. I trained in family medicine and served for 10 years as a Navy physician before choosing to add psychiatry to my training in Boston. There I was able to train with some of the best psychiatrists in the country before returning to the West to continue my work in health care. While serving in my first psychiatry position in rural Northern California, I started my family. We embarked on an exciting adventure that took us first to the Pacific Northwest and then on to New Zealand. After several years providing health care and enjoying life overseas, our family now makes our home in the Portland area.
Health care can help us all live more meaningful and valued lives — benefitting ourselves, our families, and our world. As a physician, it's been my privilege to serve several communities as a mental health-care consultant — helping adults of all sorts to find relief and to remove mental-health barriers to valued living. My training as a family physician continues to influence my practice of psychiatry. I work hard to understand each patient's struggles and needs from a broad view that looks to the whole person within their family and social world for opportunities to heal. I find that every patient encounter is an exciting opportunity to discover where this person is in their journey and where I can help advise on ways to make valued living more possible for them.
I enjoy spending time with my family, taking in life in the Pacific Northwest and hearing what new things the kids have learned in school each day. I find that woodworking and reclaiming the vinyl recordings of my younger years are particularly relaxing and grounding.
