Anemia is a decrease in the amount of oxygen-carrying hemoglobin found in red blood cells. Anemia can cause weakness, pale skin, and general tiredness, and it can affect growth and development in children.

What causes anemia?

Anemia can be caused by blood loss or bleeding, an increase in the destruction of red blood cells, or a decrease in the production of red blood cells.

Some types of anemia that can be affected by nutrition include iron deficiency anemia, folic acid deficiency anemia, and vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. Each type of anemia is treated differently.

Foods high in iron can help prevent iron deficiency anemia.

Learn more about each type and the role that diet plays in preventing and treating the disease.
