To better understand how safe and effective complementary and alternative treatments are, we are conducting research on several therapies and herbal products.
Some of these studies include:
- mind-body health programs for obesity management
- shamanistic healing for temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
- ayurvedic medicine for type 2 diabetes
- acupuncture for low-back pain
Our approach to natural remedies
We approach complementary and alternative care the same way we approach "mainstream" medicine.
First, we evaluate whether or not the treatment is safe and effective. Then we counsel our members about the risks and benefits based on current scientific evidence. Once a treatment is shown to be safe and effective, we consider how to make it part of our total medical care program.
Talk to your doctor about how you can add complementary and alternative care to your treatment plans.
