After your baby is home and settled, you may start to feel ready to get back to your pre-pregnancy self. But motherhood can present some surprising challenges.

Baby blues

"Baby blues" are common. Many women find themselves on an emotional rollercoaster after childbirth.

These feelings often occur within the first couple weeks after delivery. They usually don't last long. It doesn't mean that you're a bad mother or you don't love your baby.

If you are depressed for more than a few weeks (or your depression feels severe), contact your doctor for help. You may have postpartum depression (also called perinatal mood disorder).

Stress and exhaustion

While you may be overwhelmed with the responsibilities of caring for a baby, there are some things you can do to make life with your new baby easier.

When you're feeling stressed and overtired, ask family members and friends for help. Or consider joining a support group for new moms.
