Caring for your baby

The day you've been waiting for is finally here — your baby is home with you. Like pregnancy, the postpartum period can be a time of mixed emotions. You may feel excitement, joy, worry, and exhaustion all at once. Your baby has a unique personality and needs, which may take some getting used to.

If you're like most parents, you worry about doing everything right for your new baby. Try not to be too hard on yourself. After all, you may be new at this.

Here are some helpful tips on taking care of your baby from diapering to bathing and beyond.

Health care for your baby

It's important that you bring your baby to all appointments for routine checkups, also called well-baby visits.

Remember to enroll your newborn in a health insurance plan within 31 days after birth. Check with your employer's human resources department or a Kaiser Permanente member services representative to learn about coverage for your baby.

After your baby is enrolled, you need to select a pediatrician.

You'll also be able to manage your baby's care online to view your baby's medical record and immunizations, make well-child appointments, email your pediatrician, and more.
