Weeks 30 to 32 of Your Pregnancy: Care Instructions

Skip Navigation

Your baby is growing more every day. Its eyes can open and close, and it may have hair on its head. Your baby may sleep 20 to 45 minutes at a time and is more active at certain times.

You should feel your baby move several times every day. Your baby now turns less and kicks more.

This is a good time to tour your hospital or birthing center. You may also want to find childcare if needed.

To ease heartburn

  • Avoid foods that make your symptoms worse, such as chocolate, spicy foods, and caffeine.
  • Avoid bending over or lying down after meals.
  • Do not eat for 2 hours before bedtime.
  • Take antacids like Tums, but don't take ones that have sodium bicarbonate, magnesium trisilicate, or aspirin.

To care for large, swollen veins (varicose veins)

  • Try to avoid standing for long periods of time.
  • Sit with your feet propped up.
  • Wear support hose.
  • Get some exercise every day, like walking or swimming.

Counting your baby's kicks

Your doctor may ask you to count your baby's movements, such as kicks, flutters, or rolls.

Find a quiet place, and get comfortable. Write down your start time. Count your baby's movements (except hiccups). When your baby has moved 10 times, you can stop counting. Write down how many minutes it took.

If an hour goes by and you don't feel 10 movements, have something to eat or drink. Count for another hour. If you don't feel at least 10 movements in the 2-hour period, call your doctor.

Follow-up care is a key part of your treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and call your doctor if you are having problems. It's also a good idea to know your test results and keep a list of the medicines you take.
