This medication is a nasal spray used to cause numbness in your mouth before dental procedures on certain teeth. It contains 2 ingredients: tetracaine and oxymetazoline. Tetracaine is a local anesthetic that works by blocking nerves, which causes temporary numbness of the area. Oxymetazoline works by narrowing blood vessels in the nose area, which helps the tetracaine work better.
This medication is given as directed by your dental professional, usually 2 sprays into the nose on the same side as the tooth on which the dental procedure will be done. The 2 sprays are usually given 4 to 5 minutes apart. Your dentist may test drill the tooth to check if you are numb. One more spray may be given if the area is not numb 10 minutes after the second spray.
Runny/stuffy nose, nasal discomfort/pain, mild nose bleed, watery eye(s), numb/sore throat, headache, dizziness, or change in sense of taste may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your dentist has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
