About me

I was born on Galveston Island and grew up in Texas. Both my parents encouraged me to pursue a profession that I would find fulfilling and rewarding, and this led me to enroll in a summer program at the University of Texas Medical Branch. My mentor there inspired me to attend medical school. After receiving my medical degree and completing my residency in Rhode Island, I moved to New Hampshire to begin my career as a psychiatrist. On a visit to Hawaii Island, I fell in love with the culture and the people of Hawaii. I was truly delighted when I had the opportunity to move here.

About my practice

Two experiences influenced my decision to specialize in psychiatry. The first was volunteering at a home health and hospice program in Nashua, New Hampshire, where I worked with a children's grief program. The second occurred in my third year of medical school, when I did a rotation with the Veterans Association. There, I was exposed to the emotional lives of those who had served our country in highly stressful situations. I presented on the topic of depression at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center’s grand rounds and at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire. My professional publications include “Refractory Depression: Evaluation and Treatment," which appeared in the journal Directions in Psychiatry, and "Addressing Group Sclerosis through Fishbowl Supervision," printed in Modern Application to Group Work. To stay current in my field, I enjoy conferring with colleagues and participating in continuing medical education programs — both at Kaiser Permanente and elsewhere. I also read various professional journals and attend conferences both locally and nationally when I’m able. I’m very happy to be a part of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, whose mission and vision match my own. Staff and providers here work as a team for the good of the patient, always striving to provide high-quality, individualized treatment. My approach to care is to listen carefully to each patient and to treat all patients with respect and compassion. I believe in focusing on building rapport on the initial visit and to continue to build that rapport and trust each time I see my patient.

How I thrive

I like to recharge by taking time to enjoy life with friends, spending quality time with my dog, and traveling. I stay in shape by eating healthfully, walking, cycling, and doing yoga.
