Where I practice
While I was born and raised on the island of Oahu, I enjoy the countryside and have always wanted to live a lifestyle where I could take full advantage of the diverse outdoor activities and appreciate the beautiful surroundings of a rural community. That is why I did not hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to live and work in Kona on the western side of the Big Island. My father was a dentist and my mother was a nurse so I was naturally interested in the medical field. Growing up, I had a wonderful pediatrician who was caring, friendly and really seemed to enjoy his work. His compassion truly made a lasting impression on me and influenced me to specialize in pediatrics.
About my practice
As a pediatrician, my patients and their families rely on me to advocate for them. And at Kaiser Permanente, all of our physicians, nurses and staff work as a team with the same goal in mind: to do what is best for the patient. We work together to help each other, and my colleagues are always there to give me great medical advice for the care of my patients. Our leadership really supports us in creating this patient-centered care experience for our members. My philosophy of care is that the more information families have, the better off they are in taking care of future problems or even preventing them before they occur. Whether it is through nutrition, exercise or immunizations, I try to help them understand the nature of illnesses and what they can do to avoid them. I believe that good patient care is a partnership, one that is based on solid trusting relationships. It is important for me to get to know my patients, and allow their families to get to know me so that they can trust that I am doing everything in their best interest. I am fortunate to have amazing colleagues at the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group who feel the same way as I do. I am honored to serve as the physician-in-charge of the Big Island, overseeing clinical operations at our Hilo, Waimea, Kona and South Kona clinics. I am truly grateful to my leadership team and partners who help me to provide the best care possible for the residents of the Big Island.
How I thrive
I spend most of my time with my children keeping active outdoors or just hanging out. Playing with our dog and cat provides me with a sense of calm that helps ground me after a busy day. When I do have free time to myself, I enjoy gardening and tending to my coffee farm.
