Stay covered after a job change
You have many options for coverage. In most cases, you can stay with Kaiser Permanente so there’s no disruption in your care. Our Continuation of Coverage tool can help you find the best plan based on your budget and care needs.
- Kaiser Permanente for Individuals and Families — An individual plan available through your state’s health benefit exchange. You may be able to get federal or state help paying your monthly membership rate.
- Medicaid/Medi-Cal — No-cost or low-cost health coverage for people and their families in need of financial help.
- COBRA — A continuation of your employer-sponsored coverage for a limited time (usually about 18 months). You pay the full plan membership bill every month instead of your employer, plus a small administrative fee.
- Other group coverage — Coverage as a dependent through your spouse or partner’s employer or another organization. If you’re under 26, your parents may be able to add you to their plan.
Other reasons for new coverage
If you have coverage but want a new plan, use the Continuation of Coverage tool to find out if you have a qualifying life event, such as:
- You move to an area where your health plan isn’t available
- You turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare
- You get divorced
- You’re experiencing interpersonal (domestic) abuse and want to apply for coverage separately from your abuser
- Your spouse or partner abandons you and you want to apply for coverage separately from them
Testing and diagnosis — no cost
As a Kaiser Permanente member, you won’t have to pay for costs related to COVID-19 screening or testing if referred by a Kaiser Permanente doctor. If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19, additional services, including hospital admission (if applicable), will be covered according to your plan details.
No copay for phone and video visits
Dual Choice, Multi-Choice, and other PPO/POS plan members: Just like other Kaiser Permanente plans, most plans currently offer phone and video visits with a Kaiser Permanente provider — at no copay — even if you haven’t had an in-person visit.
