Where I practice
I was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, a country with limited medical resources, where many women die in childbirth. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be an Ob/Gyn so that I could provide care to women of all ages.
I moved to the U.S. as a child and went to college at Florida A&M University, medical school at Duke University, and completed residency training at Emory University. I was at the CDC for four years after residency, where I was able to travel to many countries, working on decreasing the transmission of HIV from pregnant women to their children.
I am passionate about improving the reproductive health of women and girls around the world. I spent a few years working with the World Health Organization (WHO) on reducing maternal mortality and I currently serve as an advisor to WHO on maternal mortality reduction. I am author of a book for teenage girls and have developed a curriculum to teach girls and young women to protect their reproductive health. I also founded a non-profit organization to improve the health of women and children in Sierra Leone called The Mama-Pikin Foundation, with my husband, who is a pediatrician.
About my practice
I take care of teenagers, pregnant women and women with routine and complex gynecological problems. I enjoy taking care of teenagers, helping them understand their changing bodies and addressing the critical issues that they face as they enter adulthood. I enjoy caring for pregnant women and still get excited participating in the delivery of every single baby. Sharing in the joy that parents and families have in bringing a new addition to their family is a wonderful experience. Finally, I like caring for the different gynecologic problems that women face throughout their lives, from adolescence to menopause.
How I thrive
I thrive by spending quality time with my family - my husband, my children and my dogs. I enjoy reading books, going for hikes and traveling around the world. I also enjoy writing, as I am the author of a children's book series.
