Anita P. Shankar, MD
I speak: English, Spanish, Tamil
My gender: Female
Where I practice
I was born in Albuquerque, N.M., but grew up mostly in Houston, Texas. My interest in medicine started at a young age. I was always inclined to science and grew up in a family that was active in our community. The combination of science and serving others made medicine the natural career choice for me.
I attended Rice University and decided to stay in Houston for my medical school and residency training. As the first physician in my family, I knew that I wanted to become a doctor who could take care of everyone, from grandchildren to grandparents. After working in Houston for a few years, my husband and I moved to Atlanta, where I joined the team at Kaiser Permanente.
About my practice
I am board certified in two specialties, internal medicine and pediatrics. I chose to pursue "Med-Peds" so I can take care of everyone, from newborns to the elderly. My training allows me to take care of healthy patients as well as those with chronic and/or complex medical conditions. I enjoy primary care because I can provide continuity of care for the entire family. I believe the key to taking care of generations of families is by building strong relationships based on trust, compassion, respect and good communication.
I practice preventive care with the goal of keeping my patients from developing chronic diseases and related medical complications. I believe that the mind, body and spirit are related so I try to treat the whole person rather than just the medical problem. I also practice evidenced-based medicine and emphasize patient education. It is vital for our members to be informed about their medical conditions so that they may make the most informed decision for their health.
I also emphasize teamwork, as health care is a partnership between the patient, doctor and parent/family. Every member is different, and I strive to work closely together with my patients to come up with the best health care plan for you.
How I thrive
I thrive by staying healthy, both physically and mentally. I enjoy meditation, yoga, pilates, dancing and pure barre. I find mental peace through listening to music, reading, cross-stitching and volunteering in the community. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and love watching movies. I also thrive at work as I love meeting new people. I enjoy working with my pediatric patients and their families and watching them grow up. I also enjoy talking with my adult patients, as I teach them about medicine, and in return, they teach me so much about living life. Together, we all thrive.
