Where I practice
I had an interest in medicine from a young age because my family was positively affected by physicians. My younger sister was born with a congenital heart disease that was very debilitating. She was frequently ill, fussy and demanded a lot of attention from my parents. There were few treatment options in my native country of Laos and my sister would not have survived. After we immigrated to America, she immediately received cardiac surgery. Doctors not only saved her life, but they saved our family. Even as a young child, I felt the impact physicians had on my family, and I knew I wanted to do the same for other families.
About my practice
I am a pediatric hospitalist and I care for newborns and children admitted to the hospital through age 17. I truly believe it takes a village to raise a child. I see myself as part of a child's "village" when caring for my patient. I value the opinions of his/her parents and other family members when making my medical decisions. I do my best to provide options in my medical plan because there is usually more than one right answer, and I allow families to help decide what is best for their child. I do my best to care for each patient as I would care for my own children or family member.
How I thrive
My children help me keep things in perspective. I have a young daughter and son. No matter how stressed I am and no matter how bad my day was, the thought of coming home to see my kids makes me smile. They make me realize what's really important in life.
