Kaiser Permanente provider
My gender: Male
My office is accepting new patients. Please call 1-855-208-7221.
I grew up in Denver, where my father was a doctor and my mother worked at the University of Colorado as a medical school librarian. I had plenty of exposure to medicine before choosing my own career and also liked biology and social sciences. I didn't really want a research career; I wanted to do something service-oriented. When I was in medical school, I discovered I was more interested in my patients' personal stories and how they coped with disease more than learning the fine points about the diseases themselves, which led me to psychiatry. Over the course of my career, I've definitely enjoyed learning the fine points about psychiatry!
I've had the opportunity to do many types of psychiatry with Kaiser Permanente but my main clinical responsibility is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which is primarily used to treat the most severe forms of depression. I try to provide a personal and reassuring touch, while providing a service that can be perceived as frightening. At times, I also help cover services for geropsychiatry, along with psychiatric consultation on medically or surgically hospitalized patients. The remainder of my time is administrative; making sure our members get the best possible care when they need to be hospitalized in one of the many psychiatric hospitals with whom we have contracts.
My favorite exercise is swimming, although I find it challenging to get as much exercise as I'd like! My wife and I have a wonderful dog who is thrilled just to take a walk around Washington Park. We also like to get into the mountains for hiking or cross-country skiing.
