Where I practice
I grew up in the Denver area, and I have lived in Colorado most of my life. My love of the mountains brought me back to Colorado after some time in the Midwest to do my medical training. I graduated from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and completed my internship and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. In addition, I completed a fellowship at the University of Iowa hospitals and clinics in Iowa City. I have had the privilege to take care of patients with cancer and blood disorders since 2002, and I have been here at Kaiser Permanente since 2008. I chose the field of medicine because I have always enjoyed helping people overcome challenges, and the specialty of oncology and hematology has allowed me to continue to do that.
About my practice
My areas of focus are brain, breast, lung, head and neck malignancies, and benign hematology. I place a high value on patients’ quality of life. I believe in nurturing a state of health in my patients rather than simply treating their disease. My patients’ input regarding their care and treatment is very important to me. Depending on a patient’s preferences, I often recommend an integrative approach that incorporates certain complementary therapies into the treatment plan. I believe in the importance of lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress management. I am comfortable discussing the role of other integrative methods including nutritional supplements. However, I am also comfortable offering a more mainstream approach to care for those patients who prefer this. I believe that in order to enhance medical care, a physician should be a good listener and develop a relationship with their patients. I encourage patients to tell me exactly what they are experiencing in order for me to help manage their care.
How I thrive
Along with spending time with my wife and children, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, skiing, listening to music, and playing guitar. I find that time outdoors, especially in the wilderness, helps me stay centered and nurtures my spirit.
