Where I practice
I grew up in Indiana, but the mountains always pulled me west. After completing my education in Salt Lake City, I moved to Denver initially for residency training in anesthesiology. I fell in love with Colorado, but moved away for a few years to complete training in Washington, D.C., and started working for Kaiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic region. After being on the East Coast, I continued to look for job opportunities in Denver, as I knew the lifestyle and opportunity to work for Kaiser Permanente was a perfect combination for me. I have one son and a 10-year-old dog, who believes he is the rightful baby of the family. As an anesthesiologist, I love taking care of patients during a potentially nerve-racking time and helping to put their fears and anxieties at ease. Although our encounters awake are brief, they are meaningful.
About my practice
I chose anesthesiology as a specialty because I found I loved the acute care of the operating room. To me, anesthesiology is basically critical care medicine in an acute setting. I believe that our job as physicians is to educate patients on their many options, explain our expertise in the risks and benefits of those options, and allow the patient to choose the best option for them. I enjoy the range of taking care of healthy patients to less healthy patients in general, thoracic and orthopedic settings. The coordination between myself and our surgical team in planning and providing top care for our patients is facilitated greatly by the Kaiser Permanente system, and I very much enjoy this part of my medical profession.
How I thrive
I thrive outside of work by enjoying time with my family. I love trucking my son around outdoors with me, whether in a bike seat or a hiking backpack. I also enjoy cooking ethnic food (regardless of the end result)!
