I was born in Denver but grew up mostly in Idaho, then returned to Colorado for medical training. Colorado is home to me, my wife and two daughters. I grew up seeing a lot of sickness and suffering in my own family and I practice medicine to help others avoid suffering from illness. I tend to see medical treatment as something that should be used only when other approaches like diet and exercise have not been successful. Sometimes less is more when it comes to medical care. I am not the boss, you are, but I'm here to help you make good health care choices.
As a primary care internist, my focus is on preventing illness, promoting healthy living, reducing complications from chronic illness, alleviating suffering, diagnosing new conditions and managing them with evidence-based treatments. I prefer to use healthy diet, exercise and stress reduction to prevent illness when possible. I see myself as a consultant to help patients make the treatment choices that fit their needs best. Sometimes that is medication or surgery, and sometimes it is rest and recovery. I seek to listen quietly in order to understand the issues and to patiently explain my thinking in order to make the best plan of care. I work as part of team that includes the patient, nursing staff, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other doctors. I spend three days per week in clinic seeing patients and two days doing work involving preventive medicine and population health.
We have a little hobby farm (an accidental animal rescue really) in Lyons where we tend to goats, sheep, chickens, bees, dogs, a cat and other critters. I love to work on the farm for exercise and stress reduction, with a specialty in setting fence posts. I love to run, bike, swim and play with my kids.
