The Admitting Department is an integral part of the intake of patients to our hospital. We handle all the registration, paperwork, prescreening and outside insurance approval processes.

The After Hours Clinic is for adults in the Department of Medicine for care after hours and on weekends.  (For Pediatric After Hours Care, please see listing for Pediatrics at in Redwood City.)

What is an urgent symptom?
An urgent care need is one that requires prompt medical attention, usually within 24 to 48 hours, but is not an emergency. 

Examples of urgent care situations include:

• minor injuries
• sore throats and upper respiratory symptoms
• earaches
• coughs
• backaches
• frequent urination or burning sensation when urinating

If you have an EMERGENCY, please call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.

We provide outpatient surgery where the patient is usualy discharged to home.

The Hearing Center offers audiological evaluations and hearing aid services for patients of all ages. We are a sub-department of Head and Neck Surgery.

The Hearing Center offers:

• Audiological evaluations and immittance testing for patients of all ages.
• Outpatient newborn hearing screening.
• Electrophysiologic and Otoacoustic emissions testing.
• Recommendations regarding referrals, amplification, and education.
• Hearing aids for purchase for patients of all ages

Cardiac Catheterization (CCL) Lab is an invasive, diagnostic specialty procedure department which performs high quality diagnostic cineangiography and hemodynamic physiologic studies on the adult and geriatric patients. Cardiac Catheterization is used to view and treat potential artery blockages that could cause heart attacks or other serious cardiovascular damage.

The lab features an all-digital cardiovascular imaging system. The system enables cardiologists to view hard-to-see blood vessels as well as the devices used during procedures, such as stents, guide wires and catheters.

We offer general dermatology services on a referral basis. We have a skilled team of dermatologists and registered nurses who provide care for our patients, and a support staff of medical assistants and a receptionist. We offer diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the hair, skin, and nails.

Our board-certified endocrinologists diagnose diseases that affect your endochrine system (which are glands that make hormones). They know how to treat conditions, which are often complex and involve many systems and structures in the body. The endocrine glands include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus.
Endocrinologists provide medical care for people with diabetes, thyroid diseases, metabolism diseases, hormonal imbalances, menopause, osteoporosis, hypertension, cholesterol disorders, infertility and birth control, short stature, and cancers of the glands.

When you’re living with hearing loss, some of your most cherished activities can become difficult and uncomfortable. It doesn’t have to be that way. Kaiser Permanente Hearing Aid Center serves health plan members and non-members alike. At our center, you can find fee-for-service hearing aids consultation and devices.

Hematology is a medicine concerned with the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases relating to blood.

The Department of Medicine at Redwood City consists of physicians and nurse practitioners who provide primary, specialty and hospital care for our members. In addition, we utilize Health Educators, Psychologists, Pharmacists, Physical Therapists and Nurses to provide care for selected problems. It is our goal to have all our members familiar with their Primary Care Physician or Nurse Practitioner so that they can receive personal and prompt attention to become and stay healthy.

Interventional Radiology is a rapidly growing area of medicine. Specially trained doctors use their expertise in reading X-rays, ultrasound and other medical images to guide small instruments such as catheters through the blood vessels or other pathways to treat disease. These procedures are generally easier for the patient because they involve no large incisions, are less painful with shorter recovery times, and less costly than traditional surgery.

Our Labor and Delivery unit, Mother/Baby unit, and Nursery provide an expert and warm environment in our hospital to support your birthing experience and your new arrival. 
There is a fold-out sleeping space for a support person to stay overnight.  
Our physicians, nursing, lactation, and social services staff will support you during your stay.
We also offer the option of personalized prenatal care and delivery with our certified nurse-midwives for most non-complicated pregnancies.

• Pediatric Centering  brings together 8 parents and their infants to meet with a pediatrician and health educator during the first 2 years of their child’s life. These families  meet as a group, while also meeting one-on-one with their pediatrician.

The Department of Nephrology offers care for all renal-related diseases. It is both a consultative service for other physicians and a primary care service for dialysis patients or those nearing dialysis.

If your primary care provider thinks you have a medical renal disease, they will perform the initial screening tests and, if appropriate, arrange for a consultation with a Nephrologist. 

Appointments and consultations will be made at a time that is most convenient for you through the use of direct booking. We look forward to taking great care of you.

This department sees adult and some teenage patients by referral only from other physicians or nurse practitioners.

Although we see patients for a number of neurologic symptoms and problems, we specialize in neurologic follow-up for the following conditions: multiple sclerosis, movement disorders (such as Parkinson’s Disease), seizure disorders, and neuromuscular diseases (e.g., amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and muscular dystrophy). We work closely with primary care providers to assist in the diagnosis and management of common neurologic disorders, and provide emergency consultation if needed.

The Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center is home to the Advanced Neuroscience Center, a center of knowledge, expertise, and technological advancements for various neuro-related medical treatments. Our Center provides specialized neurological care to Kaiser Permanente members from throughout Northern California. Our Neuroscience Center is dedicated to advancing the latest techniques and available procedures to our members.

Well Baby Nursery
Most babies stay with mom to support bonding and breastfeeding. A nurse will take your newborn briefly to our Well Baby Nursery to receive a newborn hearing screening to ensure that your baby has normal hearing. The nurses will also take your baby here for a state-required California newborn screening blood test to detect rare metabolic disorders. If you choose to have your son circumcised, he will also go to the Well Baby Nursery for the procedure.

Special Care Nursery
Our Special Care Nursery is for babies needing extra attention and is located next to the Well Baby Nursery. Visitors are allowed for the pediatric patient in the Special Care Nursery.
When needed, Neonatal Intensive Care Service units (NICU) at nearby medical centers are available to care for babies born earlier than 34 weeks.

We offer board-certified specialists in nutrition, diet, and diseases. Our Registered Dietitians have additional board-certified specialties in areas such as diabetes, kidney disease, and nutrition support. 

We work closely with your doctor, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, or care manager to provide a plan tailored to your individual needs.

We offer a unique choice to get prenatal care in a group and private setting, called Centering Pregnancy.

Centering Pregnancy is prenatal care that includes a private health check-up and also extra time and attention in a group setting. You’ll meet with your Centering Clinician and other women who are due near the same time for 9 sessions during your pregnancy.

Centering Pregnancy is a way for you to learn and share your experiences with other pregnant women while being involved in your own care. You will:

• Learn more about pregnancy
• Be better prepared for birth
• Learn to care for your baby
• Get support from other pregnant women

Midwife services are available 24/7 in our hospital.  

The midwife philosophy takes a holistic approach, recognizing that conception, pregnancy, and birth are part of a natural cycle. Our Certified Nurse Midwives provide prenatal care and attend approximately two-thirds of all vaginal deliveries and assist with most Cesarean sections in our hospital. They also collaborate with physicians and specialists as appropriate. 

Midwives also support the people who are there to support the laboring person – family members, friends and doulas.

We provide a wide spectrum of ophthalmology care, both medical and surgical. We partner with our Department of Optometry to provide primary eye care.

We also provide services across our Northern California for cornea and external eisease, refractive laser surgery such as LASIK, and complex cataract surgery.

The Department of Pain Medicine offers services to patients with pain for whom medical and diagnostic interventions have been unsuccessful. Our team includes a physician, registered nurse, pharmacist, health psychologist, and physical therapist all with special training in pain management.

Pulmonology is the specialty that deals with diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract.
